The Fugue Of Generations

The idea of The Fugues is a visual representation of a music theory motif. Wasmuth uses a variety of frames to signify musical phrases across multiple rows to represent instrumental parts, laying the work out as if forming the score of a classical piece. From there, the artist creates a storyline that flows through the first line, then echoes and compliments the subject within the phrase in a delayed second line. This theme continues across the piece, until, at the right hand side, all the frames are present and culminate into one story.

Wasmuth was heavily inspired by music theory and her experience playing instruments growing up, impelling her to involve this in her visual storytelling. She thinks that the crafting and the score of a piece is just as beautiful as the sounds and harmonies it creates. This idea led her to experiment with new ways to relate the interwoven phrases and craftsmanship into a visual story, transcending the limits of music theory.

This piece, entitled The Fugue Of Generations, depicts a generational cycle of trauma. In each row, the subject goes through phases of trauma, loneliness, and lashing out, ultimately causing the subject in the following row to be affected and to begin down the same path. This work is a commentary about how influential we are to the generations that follow us and the long term effects of traumatic events.
